Farmswatter's Cacti

Monster

Type Cacti / plant

First Encountered Session 8
Mystery Mystery 4 — Farmswatter's Miracle Cure
Weakness Alcohol — whiskey bubbles, blisters, and strips away their fleshy armour

Description

Plants kept inside H.G. Farmswatter's waggon at the market. Two forms have been observed:

The small cacti — four small, unpotted cacti, each two to three feet tall, which appear to be pulsating. They move when not directly observed ("like the Weeping Angels but plants"): look away, and they reposition to surround you. They attack physically — a hit hurts far more than a cactus should — and spray clouds of needles. They could not be fooled by eyes drawn on an object to imply they were being watched. (Can they sense sentience?) They reminded Ms March of "some corn she once saw."

The giant cactus ("Mother") — an eight-foot-tall cactus with a pulsating red flower at its centre that looks like a human heart opened and peeled back. It sits in a tub/vat containing offal, blood, and guts, and gives off a strong rotting-meat smell. It can fire spines through the air as a ranged attack (one struck Ms March in the neck for 2 Harm; a second later split the first). Farmswatter called it "Mother" and fed it his own blood. Under heavy fleshy armour that only alcohol can strip; when its armour is gone it can be killed by gunfire. It can reproduce — a baby cactus emerged from a writhing human hand in the vat when the mother was threatened. When damaged it releases a red powdery mist (see below).

The cacti wick moisture from their surroundings: anyone near the waggon feels an unnatural, desert-beating thirst, and Alfie noticed he had stopped sweating entirely in their presence. The tonic Farmswatter sold does the same to whoever drinks it — the source of the town's thirst.

The red mist — when damaged, the plants emit the same red powdery spore mist as the red algae. Only those who had drunk the tonic are vulnerable to it (Alfie inhaled it; Cuthbert and Ms March, who abstained, were immune). Its effect is euphoria — colours brighten, people feel love/trust/affection — sliding into weeping suggestibility.

Combat Notes

Stat / Ability Detail
Size Small cacti: 2–3 ft. Giant: ~8 ft
Armour The mother has heavy fleshy armour — stripped by alcohol (whiskey bubbles/blisters it away), after which it is vulnerable to gunfire
Weakness Alcohol strips the fleshy armour (same reaction whiskey caused in Bart Fletchley's infected corn)
Movement Small cacti move only when not directly watched; reposition to surround; can also scamper openly
Ranged Small cacti spray needles; the mother fires aimed spines (2 Harm to Ms March's neck; a second split the first). Destroying any cactus makes it burst, spraying spines (1 Harm, negated by armour)
Reproduction The mother births a baby cactus (from a human hand in the vat) when threatened
Red mist When damaged, emits the same red spore mist as the red algae — euphoria then weeping suggestibility; only affects those who drank the tonic
Moisture-wicking Draws moisture from the area (and from tonic-drinkers); causes intense thirst; Alfie stopped sweating nearby
Special Possibly senses sentience (not fooled by drawn-on eyes); needle spray was stopped by Ms March's Bible armour

Notes

Open Thread

Mystery 4 was closed when Farmswatter's cacti died, but the source was never touched. Fifteen are still growing at the grove, and the plant is trying to alter the environment.

Session Appearances

Session What Happened
Session 8 Four small cacti spotted in the waggon workshop by Ms March; once she was locked in, they moved to surround her, slammed her, and sprayed needles (caught by her Bible armour); she drove them back with a butcher's cleaver. Behind the curtain she found the eight-foot heart-flowered cactus in a vat of offal — it fired a spine into her neck (2 Harm). Alfie spotted the giant cactus through the waggon slats and noticed it wicking away all moisture
Session 9 The four small cacti broke loose into the market and were destroyed one by one (machete, varmint rifle, gunfire); Cuthbert doused the mother in whiskey, stripping its armour; it fired spines, released the red mist, and birthed a baby cactus before Doctor Webb bullseyed it dead. Ms March destroyed the baby and the final cactus — whose bursting spines killed Farmswatter. All cacti destroyed
Session 10 (Aftermath.) Doctor Webb examined the remains under a microscope — the red cells latch onto and manipulate other cells (extraterrestrial). The briefly reanimated Farmswatter placed their origin at a grove on a mountainside ledge near the mining village, described the hum he heard there (which Webb recognised from his nightmares), and revealed he fed the mother bodies dug from a cemetery after insects failed — it grew stronger on human meat
Session 11 The party reached the grove and found fifteen cacti growing there — eight normal sized, seven medium sized bearing the familiar flower — plus three tiny ones that moved towards Cuthbert and fired spines at him when his blood dripped into the soil (no harm done; they ignored him once he stopped bleeding). Doctor Webb dug up the root system: the cacti are a plant hybrid infestation, their roots covered in the red fibre previously seen on Bart Fletchley's corn, and the plant is attempting to take root and alter the environment. All fifteen were left standing
