Earl
At a Glance
Description
Tallish, with a swagger. Wears a hat. Handsome in a rugged way — long hair, the calloused fingers of a musician. Think Bradley Cooper in A Star is Born. A flash of fear lives under the bravado if you know where to look. His hand shakes. He is a better shooter after he has been drinking.
He calls Ms March "Junebug." He occasionally visits her parents for dinner.
Currently only has one testicle.
Notes
- Brought Alfie and Ms March to Hole; Ms March remarks this is the only good thing he has ever done
- Ms March had previously told him to stay away from Hole and stay away from her
- Was caught in Goodspring with stolen coins — evidence from the Hatchett stagecoach robbery — and brought to Sheriff O'Dougal's tent
- Drove a stagecoach for a wealthy couple in Goodspring; word got out and the Hatchett gang ambushed them, killed the couple, and took their valuables. Earl drove off with the couple's son and some of the money; the boy is hidden — only Earl knows where
- Released from O'Dougal's custody after Ms March gaslighted the sheriff into believing Earl had committed no crime
- Took back the stolen evidence money from the sleeping sheriff for use as bribes
- Ms March threw acid (from her corroded knife) at his face in the tent — doing Harm; he has an acid burn on his cheek; she gave him some booze to pour on it
- Warned Ms March about the Hatchetts before this session
- His drinking is under control. Perfectly, perfectly under control. (His hand is shaking.)
- Admitted to Ms March that he is scared — there are "some weird wolves around here lately"
- Revealed the boy's location in Session 6: near the mines North of Hole, at the base of a mountain, in a crevice near a cave not inhabited by animals
- Earl only pisses once a day; it usually happens in the evening — Ms March knows this and called him on his outhouse excuse
- The hidden boy was confirmed in Session 8 to be Rudy Haines, the surviving son of the murdered Goodspring couple; Ms March retrieved him from the caves, with the money and jewels Earl had stashed alongside food and water
- Buried in Session 8 by Ms March, who dug him an extra-deep grave as a distraction from her grief. While burying him she found one of his toes had been shot off — echoing the toes she shot off Merv and Retta. She has not told the team
- His belt buckle read "you can take my gun when you prise it out of my cold dead hands" — so Ms March took his gun, hat, belt buckle, and guitar pick
- Ms March wrote to her parents to break the news: "Earl's dead. He's missing his toe so it might have been the gangrene. Love, Junie."
Session Appearances
| Session | What Happened |
|---|---|
| Session 5 | Found in a crate at the sheriff's tent; revealed the Hatchett gang ambush; released via Ms March's gaslight; took the evidence money; acid burn from Ms March's knife |
| Session 6 | Slunk away when Retta and Merv arrived; attempted to use an outhouse as cover (Ms March called bullshit — she knows his bathroom schedule); admitted he is scared; revealed the boy is hidden near the mines North of Hole at the base of a mountain in a crevice near a cave; slipped away again while Ms March and Doctor Webb visited the gun store |
| Session 7 | Found in the barn by Ms March and Doctor Webb — kneeling in the centre of a circle of three collapsed Hatchett gang members, shot in the head. Dead. Earl was the only person who knew the boy's location. |
| Session 8 | Buried by Ms March in an extra-deep grave; she found one of his toes had been shot off and kept it from the team; she took his gun, hat, belt buckle, and guitar pick, and wrote to her parents ("Love, Junie"). The boy he hid, Rudy Haines, was retrieved from the caves |
